Fainting goats were originally bred to protect a herd of sheep. When predators came to devour the sheep, the goat would faint, become easy prey -- allowing the sheep to escape.

"Myotonia is a condition that causes Fainting goats to stiffen and/or fall over when startled." This condition lasts for 10 - 15 seconds, followed by a noticeable degree of stiffness when the animal rises and walks off. The fainting goat is not harmed in any way. After a short recovery time, he returns to normal health, retaining a normal goat life span.
