Job title

  • Astronomy Professor at Oxnard College
  • Key responsibilities

  • Oxnard College: Teaching Introduction to Astronomy and Astronomy Laboratory.  My objective is to teach the principles and methodology in physical science using astronomy as the medium.  The courses focus on the historical development of our understanding of the universe and how we know what we do.  The Nobel prize winner and noted physicist Richard Feynman said, "What I cannot create, I do not understand."  In terms of my teaching, I take this to mean it is more important to understand how we came to know what we do about the universe than just to know interesting facts about the universe.

    Biographical Information

  • I was born at a very young age and was raised in New York. I was lucky not to blow myself and the house up playing with chemistry stuff and making homemade rocket fuel in the basement. When I was in high school, I built a 6" Newtonian astronomical telescope. This was instrumental in his getting accepted at the California Institute of Technology where I received a BS in astronomy/physics. I then went to the University of Illinois and received a Ph.D. in astronomy. Since then I have lived in many places on both coasts and in the Midwest of the United States. In the 1970s I served as a VISTA volunteer in Iowa. This was a very rewarding experience. Afterwards my professional life took off in the field of computers. I lived in Ohio for 9 years teaching computer programming at Ohio State University.  In 1981 I moved to rural Virginia to work on naval defense systems, and enjoyed sailing and bicycling there, until 1995 when I relocated in Southern California.  I am an active Christian.
