Yoshinkan is a "hard" style of Aikido, which was developed by Gozo Shioda. Shioda Sensei was one of the earliest and most exceptional students of Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei), the founder of Aikido. After WWII, he formed an organization known as the Yoshinkan to perpetuate the style of Aikido taught by O-Sensei before the war. Shioda Sensei is widely considered to be one of this century's finest martial artists and innovative teachers. His style is both efficient and robust, sound reasons for its selection as the exclusive martial art taught to several branches of the Japanese police. |

AYUSA is the organization founded by Eun Jang Yu. When Yu Sensei traveled from Korea to Japan, after completing his college and military service, he was attracted to the dynamic martial art demonstrated at the Yoshinkan Aikido Honbu in Tokyo. He soon became an uchi deshi (live-in student) of Shioda Sensei. After years of hard practice and dedication under Shioda Sensei, Yu Sensei progressed to become an exceptional resident instructor (referred to as "Mr. Yoshinkan" by fellow instructors), teaching classes both at the Honbu dojo and other sites in the Tokyo area. Yu Sensei was selected by Shioda Sensei to go to England, where for 10 years he worked to successfully establish Yoshinkan Aikido. Among his prominent students is Anthony Yates Sensei, now head of the British Yoshinkan Aikido Federation. In 1985 Yu Sensei moved to California to raise his family and establish a dojo. His class members represent an extension of his family, ranging widely in age, and dedicated to developing technical excellence and Aikido spirit. Training includes weapons, basic movements, and basic and advanced techniques. These are combined with a mental awareness that provides for a comprehensive approach to Yoshinkan study. There is no competition in Yoshinkan Aikido. Visitors are welcome. |
